1 Arrested In Deadly Hwy 111 Crash, DUI Suspected, Police Say

The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday on Highway 111 north of Gateway Drive in Palm Springs, according to the Palm Springs police.

PALM SPRINGS, CA — A 34-year-old man was being held in lieu of $2 million bail Tuesday on suspicion of driving drunk and causing a crash that killed one person and injured another.

The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday on Highway 111 north of Gateway Drive in Palm Springs, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

Police said the suspect -- Austin George Jackson, 34, of Whitewater -- rear-ended another vehicle at high speed. The crash killed a passenger in the other vehicle, identified as 56-year-old Gabriel Casiano of Gardena. The 55-year-old female driver of the other vehicle was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities said Jackson, who was treated for minor injuries following the crash, has a previous out-of-state arrest related to DUI.

He was booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center around noon Sunday when he was released from the hospital on suspicion of second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and causing bodily injury while driving drunk.
