The Palm Springs police department released a video on social media on Wednesday featuring Police Chief Andrew Mills and animal control officers Jeanette Guzman and Stephanie Anderson, who discussed the risks of approaching the animals.

From late summer through winter, the bighorn sheep herd is often witnessed roaming into the city in search of food and water, according to Guzman and Anderson.

According to statistics, the animal services have responded to over 100 big horn sheep calls in the past few years. "Our responses typically mitigate people who get too close to the rams," they said. "You can still enjoy seeing them from a distance; they are gorgeous creatures. If you want to take pictures, do take pictures, but do it from afar."

While the sheep generally will not harm people unless provoked, officers warned residents to keep their distance.
