Cillian Murphy Will Receive Award At Palm Springs Film Festival, 2024

PALM SPRINGS, CA — The Palm Springs International Film Festival Friday announced that Cillian Murphy will receive the Desert Palm Achievement, Actor Award for his role in "Oppenheimer."

The award will be presented Jan. 4, 2024 to Murphy at the Palm Springs Convention Center, 277 N. Avenida Caballeros, according to festival officials. Murphy was chosen as the recipient for his performance as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's film.

"After working together on five previous films, including 'The Dark Knight Trilogy,' 'Inception,' and 'Dunkirk,' Cillian Murphy and writer-director Christopher Nolan reunite for one of the most ambitious and epic films of the year," Festival Chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi said in a statement. "Murphy gives a stunning portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer as a conflicted scientist leading the Manhattan Project to produce the world's first atomic bomb."

The Desert Palm Achievement Award has previously been presented to Riz Ahmed, Jeff Bridges, Bradley Cooper, Daniel Day-Lewis, Adam Driver, and Andrew Garfield among others, according to festival officials.

Though Murphy has starred in major studio hits, award-winning independent films, a celebrated television series and on-stage around the globe, "Oppenheimer" marks his first leading role and his sixth collaboration with Nolan, festival officials said.

He has also starred in "Peaky Blinders," "28 Days Later," "Breakfast on Pluto," "A Quiet Place Part II," "The Wind that Shakes the Barley," and "The Party," among others.

The Palm Springs International Film Festival, which gets underway with the film awards, will continue until Jan. 15, 2024.
