City Of Indio To Host Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony For New Art In Downtown Area

The sculptures were created by Sri Lankan artist Kumkum Fernando and first appeared at the 2023 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

INDIO, CA — A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held later this month for Indio's newest art installation, "The Messengers," in the downtown area.

The free event is set for 6 p.m. July 18 at 45225 Towne Street.

"Downtown Indio is where we gather, celebrate, and connect and now, 'The Messengers' will stand as iconic figures in the heart of the city," Mayor Glenn Miller said.

The sculptures were created by Sri Lankan artist Kumkum Fernando and first appeared at the 2023 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

The installation consists of three pieces, and two of the "colorful, robot-like figures, standing between 65 and 75 feet tall," will be displayed in the city, officials said.
