'Club Educate' at CSUSB Palm Desert Adopts HS' Academy for Careers in Education

The groups will work together to give HS students information about careers in education, expose them to college life through campus tours.

From CSUSB Palm Desert: Club Educate at Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus, a student club for those interested in teaching kindergarten through 12th grade, in higher education or go into counseling, has adopted the Academy for Careers in Education at Desert Hot Springs High School.

The two groups will work together to give high school students information about careers in education and expose them to college life through campus tours at the Palm Desert Campus. In turn, the partnership will give college students a chance to tutor in local school districts and interact with younger students.

The Academy for Careers in Education at Desert Hot Springs High School is in its first year as an academy with Palm Springs Unified School District. The academy was created to help with the teacher shortage PSUSD has been experiencing, and in particular, within Desert Hot Springs schools.

The academy is beginning with 25 sophomore students as its first cohort and will be expanding in the next academic year to include an incoming freshman cohort, a new sophomore cohort and the current sophomores who will be juniors. The Palm Springs Unified School District anticipates about 80-100 students in its academy next year.

“So far it has been a blast and the students are strongly considering a career in education,” said Andrew Williams Sr., coordinator of The Academy for Careers in Education at Desert Hot Springs High School. “One concern the students have is leaving the Coachella Valley, and for that reason alone, the ACE Academy sees CSUSB Palm Desert Campus as a great partner for getting our students into the teaching profession.”
