Coachella Valley Under Windblown Dust Advisory: Hazardous Conditions

COACHELLA, CA — The South Coast Air Quality Management District Wednesday extended a windblown dust advisory in the Coachella Valley through the end of Friday.

The air quality index in Whitewater Wash increased to "hazardous" since 5 a.m. Wednesday due to particulate matter pollution, the agency reported. Levels in Indio and Mecca were reported as "unhealthy."

Palm Springs experienced a lesser impact, with "moderate" amounts of PM10 for more than seven hours.

As of 10 a.m., wind speeds up to 25 mph were measured in the region. The agency forecasted that after a brief decline Thursday morning, winds would pick up in the afternoon and remain strong during the daytime Friday.
