Desert Hit-And-Run Suspect Out On Bail After Arrest

INDIO, CA — A 47-year-old man who allegedly admitted to police that he caused a hit-and-crash in Indio that left two people severely injured turned himself in to police earlier this week and was out of custody Thursday on $75,000 bail.

Julio Infante of Indio was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony hit- and-run and posted bond the following day, jail records show.

Infante was allegedly behind the wheel of a Dodge Ram pickup when it struck two people who were outside their vehicle changing a flat tire on Monroe Street north of Avenue 51 Friday about 11:50 a.m., according to the Indio Police Department.

Department spokesman Ben Guitron said Infante turned himself in Tuesday after police publicized a photograph of him, where they called him a "person of interest" in the case.

Infante met with detectives alongside his attorney and allegedly admitted to being the involved motorist, Guitron said.

Police said the driver fled the scene after the crash, though was unclear whether Infante admitted as much to detectives.

Both victims were transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where they remained in critical condition as of Thursday evening.

He had not been charged by the Riverside County District Attorney's Office as of Thursday evening. Jail records show he is scheduled to appear at the Larson Justice Center in Indio on Nov. 17.

His criminal history, if any, was not immediately available.
