DUI Checkpoint Planned In Palm Springs: What To Know

PALM SPRINGS, CA — The Palm Springs Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint Friday night at an undisclosed location within the city.

The checkpoint will be held from 7 p.m. Friday until 1 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location based on where there have been higher numbers of impaired driving-related crashes, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

The primary goal of checkpoints is to deter drivers from driving impaired to promote public safety, not to make arrests, police said.

"The safety of our community is and always will be our mission," Sgt. Kevin Lu said in a statement. "We are looking for impaired drivers because driving under the influence is dangerous and puts others on the road at risk."

Impaired driving also includes marijuana, some prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs that could interfere with driving.

A first-time DUI charge could cost drivers about $13,500 in fines and penalties, according to police. Impaired drivers could also have their license suspended.
