Felon Living In Palm Desert Suspected Of Multiple Weapons Offenses

PALM DESERT, CA — A 37-year-old Palm Desert man remained jailed Tuesday evening following his arrest this week on suspicion of possessing multiple firearms while being a convicted felon.

Jail records show that Shayne Edward Hiemstra was arrested just after 5 p.m. Monday in the 74000 block of Leslie Avenue.

Riverside County sheriff's deputies were initially called to the location regarding a report of a stolen recreational vehicle.

During an investigation, a search warrant was obtained, and deputies found "illegal firearms, narcotics, and 3D printers," as well as a stolen vehicle, according to the sheriff's department.

During the search, deputies also found an unsecured loaded firearm in a child's bedroom.

Hiemstra was booked into Indio's John Benoit Detention Center on suspicion of multiple weapons-related offenses, including being a felon in possession of a firearm; possession of a stolen vehicle; possession of illegal narcotics; and child endangerment, according to jail records.

Court records show Hiemstra has a criminal history in Riverside County, including a 2018 conviction for assault causing great bodily injury and a separate vehicle theft conviction in the same year — both felonies. He also has other felony convictions in the county, according to court records.
