PALM SPRINGS, CA – Go West! Art of the American Frontier From the Buffalo Bill Center of the West is now open at Palm Springs Art Museum. Organized by the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, the exhibition features 90 works that chronicle a pivotal period of American history (1830-1930) in which cultures were both merging and clashing in the then new world of the Old West.
Go West! begins with early 19th century representations of the West by Anglo-American artist-explorers such as George Catlin and Albert Bierstadt. The exhibition continues with works by Fredric Remington, Charles Russell and N.C. Wyeth that romanticize the western archetypes we know today. Contemporary with these depictions are objects made by Sioux, Cheyenne and other Native American tribes that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Native peoples who interacted with the earliest frontier settlers.
