Palm Springs HRC Accepts Applications for Community Service Awards

The Palm Springs Human Rights Commission is accepting applications for Community Service Awards through November 11.

PALM SPRINGS, CA - The Palm Springs Human Rights Commission is still accepting nominations for its annual Community Service Awards that recognize individuals and organizations for “Promoting Universal Human Rights Close to Home.”

Nomination forms and the criteria are available online at www.pshumanrightscommission.com. The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, November 11. The awards recognize people and organizations for promoting human rights in our local community. The Commissioners themselves also make nominations.

Past award recipients have included Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Desert; Mika Moulton, founder of Christopher’s Clubhouse; Get Tested Coachella Valley; Daniel Reynolds, a volunteer at the Braille Institute; NestEggg Food Bank; Thomas Smith, president of the Palm Springs Rotary Club; Carolyn Caldwell, CEO of Desert Regional Medical Center; WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley and Martha’s Village and Kitchen. A more comprehensive list of past recipients is listed on the Commission’s Web page, www.pshumanrightscommission.com.

The Commission is interested in learning about any local citizens or organizations that have worked notably to foster equality, ensure rights or have fought against hate crimes or any kind of ethnic, religious, sexual or other types of discrimination. The Commission requests that nominees be from the Coachella Valley. Please submit completed nomination forms to Dale.Cook@palmspringsca.gov.

The Commission will hand out the awards at its Monday, Feb. 13, 2017 meeting which will be held at 3 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall. More information about the awards and nominations is available by calling 760-322-8321.

The Palm Springs Human Rights Commission is a nine-member commission of volunteer citizens appointed by the City Council for three-year terms. It meets at 3 p.m. on the second Monday of each month in the large conference room at City Hall. Meetings are open to the public and anyone with a human rights issue or question is invited to participate and speak in the public comment period that begins each meeting.
