Caltrain Electrification Prep Work Begins in Palo Alto
This week Caltrain began literally paving the way for the electrified train tracks that will serve the SF Peninsula and Silicon Valley.

PALO ALTO, CA -- It's full speed ahead for a $1.9 billion project that will electrify the main line for commuter railroad Caltrain.
This week Caltrain started potholing for utilities in Palo Alto, as well as tree trimming and removals in the right-of-way. Potholing and tree removals are expected to continue throughout the spring, and electrification construction is set to begin in Palo Alto as early as Summer 2019.
The project is expected to improve efficiency, reduce reliance on fossils fuels, and decrease engine noise as the trains pass through Palo Alto. The electrification project also includes work on overhead power lines that supply power to trains.

According to Caltrain, electrification of the tracks will allow it to improve service times via faster acceleration, plus reduce air pollution and noise, as well as facilitate a future railway tunnel into downtown San Francisco's Transbay Transit Center.
The Caltrain PCEP website has up-to-date information regarding construction. Those with questions regarding the work can email calmod@caltrain.com or call (650) 399-9659.
