Fatal Crash Victim Identified As Palo Alto Man

The driver told police he swerved to miss stopped traffic and hit a sound wall on Guadalupe Freeway in San Jose.

PALO ALTO, CA -- A 44-year-old Palo Alto man who died in a crash on Saturday in San Jose has been identified as Candido Escorza Dimas, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

The California Highway Patrol responded at 10:11 p.m. to an overturned SUV on state Highway 87. The SUV driver told officers he was headed north on the highway, also known as Guadalupe Freeway, when he swerved to avoid hitting stopped traffic at the West Taylor Street exit.

He veered into a sound wall and the vehicle came to rest on its side, the CHP said. Five people were inside. Dimas, a passenger, was killed and a woman was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

No one else in the SUV appeared to be injured, according to the CHP.
