Man Killed In Portola Valley Crash Was Mayor's Son
23-year-old Charles Derwin was found in a gray 2011 Toyota Prius that hit a tree and caught fire.
PORTOLA VALLEY-A man killed in a car crash in Portola Valley early Sunday morning has been identified by the San Mateo County coroner’s office as 23-year-old Charles Derwin, a son of the town’s mayor.
The crash was reported at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday in the 900 block of Portola Road and involved a gray 2011 Toyota Prius that hit a tree, sheriff’s Detective Salvador Zuno said.
Deputies responded and found firefighters trying to put out a fire in the Prius.

Once the flames were extinguished, Derwin was found dead inside the vehicle.
Derwin is the son of Maryann Derwin, who was elected mayor by her fellow council members at a Town Council meeting earlier this month.
