SILICON VALLEY, CAA Silicon Valley school serving low-income families — founded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Dr. Priscilla Chan — announced Monday that it will permanently close its campuses.

The Primary School, which is funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, will shut down at the end of the 2025-26 academic year.

Founded in 2016 by Chan, a pediatrician, the school aimed to integrate education, healthcare, and family support for underserved communities.

The school did not disclose why it was closing, but the announcement comes amid a broader trend of Meta rolling back social initiatives — including the recent dismantling of its third-party fact-checking program on Facebook, which had aimed to curb misinformation.

"This was a very difficult decision, and we are committed to ensuring a thoughtful and supportive transition for students and families over the next year," a school statement reads.

To ease the transition, the school announced that it will invest $50 million over the next few years in the East Palo Alto, Belle Haven and East Bay communities.

The funding will go toward 529 education savings plans for all students and transition specialists who will help families navigate moving to new schools, according to a school statement.

Its flagship East Palo Alto campus, located at 2086 Clarke Avenue, serves just under 450 students. Meanwhile, its San Leandro campus, at 750 Fargo Ave. serves 108 families, according to the school's website.
