Middle Managers Likely Next Meta Layoff Targets: Zuckerberg

CEO Mark Zuckerberg during a fourth-quarter earnings call told Meta investors the company is aiming to make 2023 the "year of efficiency."

MENLO PARK, CA — Meta is hinting at more layoffs, and Mark Zuckerberg indicated the next round of job cuts will target middle managers.

Zuckerberg during a fourth-quarter earnings call on Wednesday told Meta investors the company is aiming to make 2023 the “year of efficiency,” The Verge reports.

Zuckerberg acknowledged the company’s enormous workforce has made it hard to focus on efficiency, the report said.

“I just think we’ve entered somewhat of a phase change for the company,” Zuckerberg said.

A Meta press release indicated more “restructuring” lies ahead for the social media behemoth.

“We may incur additional restructuring charges as we progress further in our efficiency efforts,” the company said in a news release.

The specter of another round of job cuts follows the announcement of mass layoffs less than three months ago. Meta laid off around 11,000 in November.

Meta’s stock value surged 20 percent on news of the Facebook founder’s cost-cutting strategy.

And if Zuckerberg’s comments during a recent all-hands meeting are any indication, middle managers will be the first to go.

“I don’t think you want a management structure that’s just managers managing managers, managing managers, managing managers, managing the people who are doing the work,” Zuckerberg said in the meeting, the content of which was obtained by The Verge’s Command Line newsletter.

“We’re going to be more proactive about cutting projects that aren’t performing or may no longer be as crucial.”
