PALO ALTO, CA — Neighbors Abroad, a Palo Alto-based nonprofit, has partnered with a European children’s organization to raise more than $24,000 for children in Ukraine as of Tuesday morning.

Jeannet Kiessling, the president of the Germany division of the children’s organization kleine herzen — which operates near Neighbors Abroad’s sister city of Heidelberg — said to Patch on Monday that she’s been heartened by the large number of donations since the fundraiser was set up last Friday. Most of them have come from local Bay Area residents.

The fundraiser specifically supports orphans and homeless children in Ukraine who have been impacted by Russia’s invasion, which has created a shortage in food and basic supplies.

“I’m not surprised but it really touches my heart how quickly Neighbors Abroad jumped in on this and said, ‘We’re helping and set this fundraiser up,’” Kiessling said.

Kiessling added that kleine herzen knows all of the children in their orphanages.
