ATHENA awards were first handed out 36 years ago when Michigan Regional Chamber member Martha Mertz realized she was the only member of the board. Mertz considered such notable women as Mother Theresa and Rosa Parks to bring home the message that women of high accomplishment must be honored for their strength and enlightenment. ATHENA lends its name from the Greek Goddess that stands for these two traits.

Since 1982, more than 7,000 award winners from 500 communities in eight countries have been given the nod for their achievements.
