Palo Alto Man Dies From Injuries Suffered After Being Hit By Vehicle

An elderly man who suffered injuries when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing a Palo Alto street two weeks ago has died, police say.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA -- An elderly man who suffered major injuries when he and his wife were struck by a vehicle while crossing a Palo Alto street two weeks ago has died, police said Tuesday.

The man, who's in his 80s, died at a hospital May 23. His identity has not been released. His wife, who's also in her 80s, remains hospitalized and is in stable condition with major injuries, according to police.

The crash occurred on May 9 at about 7:50 a.m. in the 700 block of Mayfield Avenue, according to police.

After receiving a report of a crash, officers responded and found that a vehicle struck the couple. The pair was taken to a hospital, both with major injuries. The driver who struck the couple, a Palo Alto woman in her 40s, was not injured. She remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.

Detectives determined that the couple was crossing Mayfield Avenue in the middle of the block. At the same time, the woman, driving a 2015 Nissan Leaf, was heading west on Mayfield Avenue and struck them.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor. An investigation into the crash remains ongoing. The driver has not been arrested, however the case will be sent to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office for review, police say.
