Pat Burt Elected Palo Alto's New Mayor, Lydia Kou Vice Mayor
Two councilmembers supported electing Kou because the city has not had an Asian American mayor for a decade.

PALO ALTO, CA — Pat Burt was appointed mayor of Palo Alto for 2022, a role he will take on for the third time.
Burt previously served as mayor in 2010 and 2016, and will again lead the city after returning to the council in 2020. He had left the council after two terms in 2016. Burt served as vice mayor in 2021.
Two councilmembers supported electing Lydia Kou as mayor, according to the Palo Alto Weekly, because the city has not had an Asian American mayor for a decade. But Kou declined the nomination and Burt’s appointment was approved by a 6-0 vote, with councilmember Greg Tanaka abstaining.
