Rich Block, Poor Block: How Do Neighborhoods In Palo Alto Compare?

What are the annual median household incomes in different parts of town?

Drive through neighborhoods in Palo Alto, and it may be difficult to spot differences between affluence, bringing up the question: is there disparity between different parts of town?

A new data-based website, Rich Blocks, Poor Blocks provides some answers to that question. The site uses U.S. census information compiled from the 2007-2011 American Community Survey to show median household income and monthly rents by census tract.

The highest neighborhoods are the blocks in the Crescent Park area, which report median incomes of $209,000 a year.

Nearby, in the neighborhoods that straddle Embarcadero Road, median annual incomes are about $157,000.

The lowest incomes are on-campus housing at Stanford University, averaging $33,000 annually.

From the west side of campus to Sand Hill Road, the median annual income are about $190,000.

Overall, median incomes in Palo Alto are far higher than state averages. The range for median household income in California is $28,000 to $125,000 a year. The statewide middle-class income range is $53,264 to $68,300.
