Stanford Blood Center Facing 'Immediate Need' For Donations
Blood center officials said that this time of year is a challenging time to collect blood donations because many families go on vacation.
PALO ALTO, CA — Stanford Blood Center is facing an “immediate need” for blood donations from all blood types, especially type O negative blood.
Blood center officials said that this time of year is a challenging time to collect blood donations because many families go on vacation in the summertime. The center currently has less than a four-day supply of O negative blood, according to Dr. Suchi Pandey, the chief medical officer.
“We’re seeing an uptick in patient demand at our partner hospitals, especially during the last few weeks where we have supported numerous heart and liver transplants,” Pandey said in a news release.

Renee Gipson, the donor services director at Stanford Blood Center, said that a decline in donors could impact patient care.
“It’s the blood that we have readily available that allows us to save a life at a moment’s notice,” Gipson said. “So, before heading out for summer activities or that family vacation, we’re urging the community to please consider making an appointment to donate to help maintain a stable blood supply this holiday weekend and in the coming months.”
