Stanford Professors Elected as Members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

The academy is one of the country's oldest and most prestigious honorary learned societies, and a leading center for independent policy research.

Among its 4,600 members and 600 foreign fellows are some of the world's most accomplished leaders from academia, business, social policy, energy and global security, the humanities and the arts.

The new class will be inducted at a ceremony Oct. 12 at the academy's headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.

Stanford's new members are:

Arthur I. Bienenstock, professor emeritus of materials science and of applied physics; special assistant to Stanford President John Hennessy for federal research policy

Nicholas Bloom, professor of economics; co-director, Productivity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program, National Bureau of Economic Research

Alan Code, the Ward W. and Priscilla B. Woods Professor, School of Humanities and Sciences; professor of philosophy

David L. Dill, professor of computer science

Simon David Jackman, professor of political science

Peter F. Michelson, professor of physics

Suzanne Ruth Pfeffer, the Emma Pfeiffer Merner Professor in the Medical Sciences, School of Medicine; professor of biochemistry
