Expect Increased Aircraft Noise Over Palos Verdes This Week

Residents on the Palos Verdes Peninsula may experience increased air traffic flying over the area Wednesday and Thursday nights as the Federal Aviation Administration conducts annual tests at Los Angeles International Airport, officials announced this week.

According to the Los Angeles World Airports Noise Management Section, tests of the airport's aircraft navigation systems will cause air traffic to take off and land westbound (over the ocean) on Wednesday and eastbound (over land) on Thursday between the hours of midnight and 3 a.m. 

Normally, planes take off and land westbound between the hours midnight and 6:30 a.m. to keep noise over neighboring communities to a minimum. During testing, officials said residents may notice increased activity overhead due to the temporary change.

"The aforementioned circumstance requires the airport to temporarily deviate from this air traffic flow configuration," LAWA Environmental Specialist David Chan said in a statement. "As a result, persons living near the airport may notice a change in aircraft flight activity and associated noise during this test."

Chan said that normal airport operations will resume after the two day test.
