RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — Firefighters contained a small brush fire Monday afternoon in Rancho Palos Verdes.

The flames were contained about 2:55 p.m., officials said. The southbound lanes of Hawthorne Boulevard from Palos Verdes Drive North to Blackhorse Road were closed and reopened by 3:40 p.m. Drivers were urged to avoid the area.

Gusty Santa Ana winds have locals on the alert, with a high risk for fires and red flag warning in effect throughout the Southland.

A wind-driven wildfire was burning in eastern Orange County, threatening homes around the Irvine community, officials say. The fire, which erupted east of Tustin and north of Lake Forest, has scorched more than 4,000 acres with no containment as of 1 p.m. Monday. Two hotshot firefighters suffered critical burns while battling the blaze and more than 500 firefighting crews continue to attack the fire from the ground.
