San Pedro Fire Impacts Palos Verdes Peninsula

Residents on the east side of the PV Peninsula, including those in Rancho Palos Verdes, report awakening to the sight and smell of smoke.

A fire damaged a commercial building in San Pedro Monday, causing the roof to collapse and drawing more than 140 firefighters, authorities said.

The fire at 524 S. Pacific Ave. broke out at 4:15 a.m. and was extinguished in two hours and nine minutes, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

A fire captain was taken to a hospital for treatment of “exertion” and listed in fair condition, Humphrey said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

Residents on the east side of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Rancho Palos Verdes reported a strong smell of smoke that combined with visible smoke once the sun began to rise.

Streets near the fire scene were shut down during the firefighting effort and Metro lines 246 and 450 were interrupted, with buses having to detour around Pacific.
