Redondo Beach Appoints 23-Year Department Veteran As New Police Chief

REDONDO BEACH, CA — Redondo Beach has appointed a 23-year veteran of the department as its new chief of police, city officials announced Monday.

Steve Sprengel, who is a second-generation member of the Redondo Beach Police Department, will take the helm from Chief Joe Hoffman starting on Dec. 27, officials said.

“Steve brings excitement, passion, caring, integrity, and commitment to the position and will build on the many successful initiatives implemented by his predecessor and mentor, Chief Hoffman,” City Manager Mike Witzansky said in a written statement.

Sprengel called the appointment an honor in a written statement.

“I anticipate a smooth transition from Chief Hoffman’s achievements, and I am committed to upholding the department’s culture of unity, professional development, and our vision,” Sprengel said.

During his tenure with the department, Sprengel has worked a variety of roles, including a field training officer, a lieutenant watch commander and the department’s DUI instructor, according to officials.

“Additionally, as Captain, Steve supervised the Special Operations, Patrol, and Support Services Bureaus, demonstrating steady leadership and a deep understanding of departmental operations,” officials said.

Before joining the department, Sprengel owned and operated a general contracting business, as well as served three years as a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff, officials said.

Sprengel has a master’s degree in law enforcement and public safety, as well as a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

“His career reflects a consistent commitment to professionalism, integrity, and Service,” officials said, adding that Sprengel’s appointment “marks an exciting new chapter for the Redondo Beach Police Department.”
