RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — Have a ton of bulky paper and don't know how to get rid of it? Rancho Palos Verdes is offering residents a free paper shredding event this Saturday.

The free drive-thru paper shredding event will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. on May 10 at the Ken Dyda Civic Center, located at 30940 Hawthorne Boulevard, RPV officials announced Thursday.

Rancho Palos Verdes puts on this event to help residents destroy documents, such as pay stubs, insurance records or mortgage statements, to reduce the possibility of identity theft or fraud, according to city officials.

This event is meant only for RPV residents, according to city officials, who said participants will need to bring proof of residency, such as a utility bill or ID.

People looking to shred away their documents are limited to three bankers boxes or paper bags per household, according to city officials. Although leaving documents stapled or held together by paper clips is acceptable, city officials ask that all papers be removed from three-ring binders.

Electronic waste, such as computers, TVs and printers, will also be collected at the event, city officials said. No hazardous items, including needles, expired medicine or paint, are allowed.

Free self-serve mulch will also be provided at the event. City officials recommend bringing a shovel, gloves and cans. People will be limited to three cans of mulch.
