PALOS VERDES, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

This submission comes from Annette Poole Medina who nominated Ken Poole of Palos Verdes. Annette is Ken's daughter and admires the actions he takes to care for the community in his retirement.

How do you know the local hero?

He’s my Dad

What does the local hero do?

My Dad is retired.

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

As a resident of Rancho Palos Verdes for 50+ years, my Dad finally gets to enjoy himself. He hikes the beautiful trails around the community. But he doesn’t just hike. He greets people along the way. He refills the dog waste bag dispensers(he doesn’t even have a dog!), he picks up trash and even carries supplies in a backpack to clean up graffiti along the way.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero?

He’s a walking role model. If you get the chance to hike with him, one can witness his pride of this community as he greets passers-by, “Hello there! Beautiful weather we’re having!” “You’re almost there!” “Did you see the dolphins out there?” He’s got a story or just a smile and a twinkle of his eye to make a community connection.

Thank you for all you do, Ken Poole!
