📰 News we're reading

1. Pres. Trump to cut all funding to sanctuary states and cities, including Santa Ana, by Feb. 1 (newsantaana.com) — Pasadena is among California cities that joined a federal lawsuit challenging what they call unconstitutional immigration enforcement, a key front in the fight over sanctuary policies now facing major funding threats. President Trump’s plan to cut federal money to sanctuary states and cities by February 1 could hit California programs like child care and social services, though recent court injunctions have temporarily blocked some of the harshest cuts.

2. Latest Altadena bear squatter is gone — for now. Why it won't be the last (latimes.com subscription) — Pasadena Humane officers have again confirmed a bear living under an Altadena home, just a week after another 550‑pound bruin was forced out from a nearby house. While the latest bear has moved on, Pasadena-based experts warn that fire-driven habitat loss and unsecured crawlspaces and trash make future bear encounters around the San Gabriel foothills increasingly likely.

3. Elijah Sarratt Is ‘Blocking Out The Noise' Ahead Of National Championship (hoosierhuddle.com) — Pasadena’s Rose Bowl provided the backdrop for Indiana receiver Elijah Sarratt’s postseason run, including the 2026 College Football Playoff quarterfinal. Now he’s describing how he’s tuning out social media, trusting his coach’s process, and aiming for his best performance yet as Indiana prepares to face Miami for the national championship.

4. Needle and Thread as Resistance (localnewspasadena.com) — Right now you can see powerful quilts exploring Black history and resilience at Pasadena Museum of History, with two exhibitions extended through February 22, 2026. Local and national stories of African American quilting, activism, and community care are woven throughout, including work by the African American Quilters of Los Angeles and partners like The Huntington.
