Takashi Tomo-Oka at the Pacific Asia Museum

This is the celebrated Japanese photographer's first exhibition in an American museum and first appearance on the West Coast.

The Pacific Asia Museum will showcase works from celebrated photographer Takashi Tomo-oka in the first of a year-long series of contemporary Asian art exhibitions.

Tomo-oka's exhibit runs from April 19 through July 28 in the Focus Gallery. It features six scroll-mounted photographic works that combine the classical with the contemporary.

"Tomo-oka's works demonstrate the dynamic of technology energizing art traditions and carrying them forward in new and innovative ways," Curator Bridget Bray said in a statement.

As a young artist, Tomo-oka practiced nihonga, or, neo-traditional Japanese painting. However, he eventually became drawn to photography and the digital camera replaced brushes and paint as his medium of choice.

His minimalist images of fragile-looking blossoms like dahlias and orchids are digitally printed on handmade washi paper and mounted in scroll format.
