📰 News we're reading

1. Animal Rights Activist Says She Is Held In Cell 23 Hours A Day (patch.com) — Petaluma animal rights activist Zoe Rosenberg is serving a 30-day jail sentence after being convicted of taking chickens from the Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse, and her supporters say her serious medical conditions make incarceration dangerous. They’re raising alarms about her reported 23-hour-a-day isolation and limited access to glucose under Wellpath’s contracted jail medical care, while also pressuring Gov. Gavin Newsom for a pardon. The case has drawn national activist attention but centers on actions and agriculture impacts in Petaluma.

2. Petaluma DUI Crackdown Nets Nearly 1,000 Stops, Multiple Arrests (patch.com) — Petaluma drivers saw heavy enforcement as police ran a DUI checkpoint that stopped nearly 1,000 vehicles and led to multiple arrests and license citations. Officers emphasized that impairment can come from alcohol, marijuana, or even some legal medications, and warned that a first DUI can cost about $13,500 and a suspended license. The operation was funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

3. Shopping Cart Fire Spreads To Petaluma Homeless Encampment (patch.com) — A man living in a Petaluma homeless encampment near Telephone Alley was arrested on suspicion of arson after a burning shopping cart fire spread to his campsite and threatened a nearby building. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, preventing major structural damage, while police treated the suspect for minor burns and are asking Petaluma residents to share any information about the incident.

4. San Pablo to Get Grant to Fight Underage Drinking (ccpulse.org) — Petaluma police will receive up to $30,000 in state funding to crack down on underage drinking and alcohol-related harms locally. The grant, part of a larger California program running through September 2026, will fund decoy operations, fake ID enforcement, and extra holiday compliance checks in and around businesses that sell alcohol.

5. Sonoma Botanical Garden presents Bonsai & Blossoms (sonomasun.com) — Two Petaluma bonsai artists, George Haas and Diane Matzen, are among six Sonoma County creators featured in Sonoma Botanical Garden’s “Bonsai & Blossoms” exhibition running January 9–March 22, 2026. Residents can explore blooming miniature trees, hanami-inspired strolls, workshops, and tea ceremonies that highlight the art and tradition behind flowering bonsai.
