Police Arrest Cyclist Running Red Light For Evading Officer

The Petaluma officer attempted to stop the rider for failing to stop for a red light and the officer. He was also booked on drug charges.

PETALUMA, CA -- A transient man who ran a red light on a bicycle then avoided stopping for an officer on Lakeville Street was arrested on charges of evaded law enforcement and carried methamphetamine that was found during a search.

Police said the man identified as Jason Remel, 37, was also under the influence of alcohol. The same rules for motorists apply to those riding a bicycle in traffic.

Remel allegedly ran the red light on the 900 block of Lakeville St. at 1:17 a.m. Tuesday when officers spotted him also riding against traffic and failing to have required lights to ride in the darkness. After the man refused to stop, the responding officers corralled the suspect and pulled him off the bicycle, police claim.
