PETALUMA, CA — Youth and seniors can now ride free on SMART trains throughout Sonoma and Marin counties under a new pilot program that started April 1.

According to a recent announcement, the program runs through June 30, 2025, and allows youth 18 and younger and seniors 65 and older to board any SMART train, any day of the week and ride fare-free. Youth and seniors are not required to have a Clipper Card or to use the SMART eTickets app, to reduce any barriers to entering the transit system.

Train conductors will check fares as usual; seniors and youth may be asked for proof of age and can provide a state-issued ID card or license, or a student ID card from their school. If a Clipper Card is presented by a youth or senior passenger, a $0 fare will be charged.

"We believe that equitable access to safe, reliable, and sustainable transportation is essential for fostering inclusive and connected communities," said Eric Lucan, chair of the SMART Board of Directors. "By removing financial barriers for youth and seniors, we're not only facilitating easier mobility but also contributing to a cleaner, greener future for the communities we serve."

Youth and seniors collectively represent 42 percent of the population of Sonoma and Marin counties yet currently account for 25 percent of SMART’s ridership. SMART's free fare initiative aims to provide economic and recreational opportunities to this underserved demographic while cultivating habits of utilizing sustainable transportation options.

Lucan further emphasized the broader environmental benefits.

"With more individuals choosing to use rail transit over personal vehicles, we're making gains in reducing our region's carbon footprint and contributing to a cleaner and greener environment," Lucan said.

In addition to reducing individual vehicle emissions, passenger rail fosters eco-friendly cities, alleviating traffic congestion and reducing the necessity for expansive road networks, thus preserving valuable green spaces, SMART officials said.

"With free fare for youth and seniors SMART makes a significant step forward in supporting accessibility, sustainability, and community well-being," SMART Spokesperson Julia Gonzalez said. "The agency looks forward to the positive impact this initiative will have on the region and its residents."
