Less than a week after the Hercules City Council rejected the idea of studying a BART expansion north along I-80, a BART director advocating for it will go before the city's planning commission.
Zakhary Mallett, who represents Pinole, Hercules, El Cerrito and other areas, will discuss wBART, a West Contra Costa County rail extension, Monday night.
"The last time that an actual BART extension in West Contra Costa County was aggressively considered was in 1992," Mallett wrote in an email newsletter. "Now, over two decades since the second time around, this young man who was back-then a five-year-old playground boy, is trying to establish political consensus just to do a data-driven study to relook at a West Contra Costa County BART (or alternative rail) extension."
The Hercules City Council last week declined to put its support behind a study to look at the feasibility of such an expansion, worrying that it would compete for funding with a planned Amtrak and ferry station in Hercules, the Intermodal Transit Center.
"I don't want to see the ITC competing with your study," the Contra Costa Times quoted Mayor John Delgado as saying.
Mallett will present to the Hercules Planning Commission at 6 p.m. Monday in the City Council Chambers, 111 Civic Dr.
