Construction Continues On I-80 Through Fall 2025
A Caltrans median barrier and safety lighting project will continue from the Alameda/Contra Costa County line to the Carquinez Bridge.

ALAMEDA AND CONTRA COSTA COUNTIES, CA — Caltrans is upgrading the median barrier and installing safety lighting on Interstate 80 from just west of the Alameda/Contra Costa County border all the way to the Carquinez Bridge to enhance safety and ease of mobility for motorists.
Work is currently taking place on I-80 in Richmond and San Pablo between the San Pablo and El Portal exits and will continue east on I-80 to the Carquinez Bridge.
The demolition of the existing concrete median barrier has concluded. While residents living close to the freeway in this area can still expect some noise, Caltrans Spokesperson Janis Mara said noise levels were not expected to reach the same level as the median barrier demolition.

"Every effort is being made to minimize noise and inconvenience," Mara said. "Sound monitoring equipment is present at every location where work is taking place and noise levels will be closely monitored. Caltrans thanks residents for your patience as we work to improve the freeway. When the work is done, visibility will be better on the freeway at night, enhancing safety for motorists."
Crews are replacing the existing concrete median barrier with a new barrier and new safety lighting that minimizes glare from headlights. The guardrail is also being upgraded, and the pavement will be resurfaced.

Lane and ramp closures will occasionally be necessary to accommodate the work, but the freeway will not be closed completely, Mara said.
Caltrans will schedule the lane closures for nighttime hours to minimize the inconvenience to the traveling public. Signage and California Highway Patrol officers will be on hand to guide motorists.
Traffic has been shifted temporarily so the contractor can install the new barrier and lighting. Temporary pavement delineation will shift on eastbound and westbound Route 80 traffic toward the outside shoulders. The shift is temporary; the lanes will return to their previous configuration when the work is complete, Mara said.
"Caltrans again thanks residents for your patience as we work to enhance safety and visibility on Interstate 80 in Alameda and Contra Costa County."
