PINOLE, CA — A 12-year-old student at Pinole Middle School was cited in connection with a school shooting threat earlier this week, police said Friday in a news release.

A school official notified the Pinole Police Department at 8:20 p.m. Monday about an email sent to school staff that indicated there would be a shooting the next day — Tuesday, Nov. 2 — at the campus on Mann Drive, Pinole police Lt. Matthew Avery said Friday in a news release.

With the assistance of school officials, detectives identified a 12-year-old student as the suspect, the lieutenant said.

"Officers interviewed the student who later confessed to sending the email," Avery said. "Officers determined there was no further threat to the campus or the public as a result of the investigation."

The student was cited on suspicion of threatening violence to another person that will result in death or great bodily injury to occur upon the grounds of a school and was released to the custody of a parent.

"The department is working with the parents to provide resources to the student and family," Avery said.

On Monday, a Pinole Middle School student brought a pellet gun to school, prompting a campus lockdown and a police response.
