Bay Area Police Give Mail Theft Prevention Tips
Don't be a victim of mail theft -- protect yourself.

BAY AREA, CA -- Residents of cities across the Bay Area have found themselves victims of mail theft, and they and others have wondered what can be done to prevent such thefts.
In response to the issue, the Concord Police Department has put together a list of things you can do to prevent becoming a mail and/or identity theft victim.
The things to do include:

- Collect mail as soon as practical – DO NOT leave mail in the mailbox overnight.
- Do place a vacation hold on your mail with the Post Office if you are leaving town for more than three days.
- Do not place outgoing mail -- especially checks -- in the mailbox. Either take them to Post Office or place in a USPS blue mail collection box.
- Pay bills electronically. Convert as many bills as possible to electronic delivery. (All utility companies offer this service).
- Consider having all your mail delivered to a P.O. Box.
- Opt out of pre-screen credit card application and mail marketing.
