East Bay House Fire Leads to Discovery of Illegal Marijuana Grow Operation

BREAKING: The fire may have been caused by an electrical malfunction resulting from excess power being drawn by an electric bypass meter.

EAST BAY, CA -- Firefighters responding to an early morning house fire in Pittsburg over the weekend found an illegal marijuana grow operation there, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

A neighbor walking a dog around 5 a.m. on Jan. 21 areported seeing fire and embers from the roof of a home in the 1700 block of Bridlewood Drive, fire Captain George Laing said.

During the course of their work, the responding firefighters discovered marijuana being cultivated inside, according to Laing.

Investigators believe the blaze was caused by an electrical malfunction, resulting from excess power being drawn by an electric bypass meter that had been installed.

No one was home at the time and no arrests have been made as of Jan. 23, Laing said. Minimal damage was caused to the home.
