Affordable Senior Housing Pre-Applications Accepted in Pleasanton

MidPen Housing Corporation will begin accepting pre-applications on May 8 for Pleasanton's new affordable senior housing development.

From the City of Pleasanton: MidPen Housing Corporation, the nonprofit affordable housing developer selected by the City of Pleasanton to redevelop the former Kottinger Place and Pleasanton Gardens senior housing complexes, will begin accepting pre-applications beginning on May 8 for Phase 1 of Kottinger Gardens, Pleasanton’s new affordable senior housing development.

“The new Kottinger Gardens project will not only increase the amount of housing for very low income seniors in Pleasanton, but also provide our community with a state-of-the-art senior housing development,” said Assistant City Manager, Brian Dolan.

Phase 1 includes 51 apartments in nine single-story cottage buildings which were completed in March 2017, as well as 80 apartments in a two- and three-story building, anticipated to be complete in October. The development features a community room and kitchen, computer lounge, fitness room, laundry, and outdoor amenities including community garden plots for residents, a bocce ball court, seating areas and outdoor patio. The apartments are reserved for lower income households with incomes between 30 and 60 percent of the Area Median Income for Alameda County who have at least one member of the household 62 years of age or older.

Priority for the apartments has been given to returning households from the former Kottinger Place and Pleasanton Gardens, as well as those on the Kottinger Place waitlist. Pre-applications will be available beginning on May 8 for the remaining available units at a number of Pleasanton locations: the Leasing Office at 251 Kottinger Drive; the City of Pleasanton offices at 200 Old Bernal Ave.; the Pleasanton Public Library at 400 Old Bernal Ave.; and the Pleasanton Senior Center at 5353 Sunol Blvd. Pre-applications must be submitted to the Leasing Office (by mail or in person) between May 22 and June 5, 2017 by 5 p.m.

In 2003, the City began studying the potential for the replacement, expansion and renovation of Kottinger Place and Pleasanton Gardens, two apartment complexes with a total of 90 units for low income seniors. Located at 240 and 251 Kottinger Drive, the complexes were built in late 1960s and early 1970s and were an important source of housing for extremely low income seniors for many years. However, both suffered from ongoing maintenance issues and were not built to modern standards for design, energy efficiency, and senior needs.
