Pleasanton JCPenney To Close
It's the latest closure for the nearly 125-year old chain, and just six locations will remain in the Bay Area after this one shutters.

PLEASANTON, CA — The JCPenney store at the Stoneridge Shopping Center will close on February 22, 2026, the company confirmed to Patch.
“Regretfully, we are unable to continue our current lease terms for this store location and have been unable to find another suitable location in the market. We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our Pleasanton, CA, location through the years,” a representative wrote in an email.
They did not respond to Patch's inquiry as to whether current Pleasanton employees will be transferred to other branches.

JCPenney has closed numerous locations in recent years, most recently at San Bruno’s Tanforan Mall in January 2025. After the Pleasanton location closes, only six locations will remain in the Bay Area.
The company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020, and closed around 242 stores. In 2025, it announced it would close eight additional stores in the middle of the year.

The Stoneridge Shopping Center has seen a number of flagship stores close in recent years, including Sears in 2019, and Nordstrom in 2020. In 2023, the city of Pleasanton approved a 360-unit multifamily apartment complex on the southeast corner of the property, with a broader vision of turning underused portions of the property into high-density, mixed-use development.
The project has faced numerous hurdles, notably because the property is owned by four major owners who would need to agree on all redevelopment decisions, according to reports. As of July 2024, the city has granted six extensions to the project.
