PLEASANTON, CA — Valley Humane Society is one of 90 shelters in 28 states participating in an Empty the Shelters adoption campaign.

The "emergency" campaign is organized by the BISSELL Pet Foundation and comes as shelters nationwide report a 30 to 50 percent drop in adoptions coupled with a six to 13 percent increase in intakes for cats and dogs, the organization said in a statement. Kennels are experiencing overcrowding and pets face longer shelter stays.

“Shelters are being faced with tough decisions, such as euthanizing healthy, wonderful pets. We hope this event and the facilitated animal transports can provide some much-needed relief for shelters in dire need of support," said Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, in the statement.
