Live Fire Training Burn Scheduled At Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area

The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and numerous other fire departments are coordinating a live 25-acre burn this week for training.

PLEASANTON, CA — The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and East Bay Regional Park District Fire Department are conducting live fire training burns on Tuesday, Wednesday, and possibly Thursday at the Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area.

The training will burn approximately 25 acres of grasslands in the western part of Shadow Cliffs, and is scheduled between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The park will remain open to the public, though some trails will be closed.

During the training, numerous fire agencies will work together to share best practices regarding fire behavior, fighting fire with fire, holding operations, mobile attack, and more effective fire suppression operations.

In addition to LPFD and EBRPD, CAL Fire, the Hayward Fire Department, the Oakland Fire Department, and the Alameda County Fire Department will take part.

The scheduled training also supports EBRPD programs for vegetation management, hazardous fuel load reduction, and wildlife habitat improvement by removing noxious weeds and accumulated fuels, EBRPD said in a news release. Live burns also enhance the health of the park by promoting the growth of native grass and flowers, and reducing the severity of future wildfires.

Live burns are planned in coordination with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to minimize impacts on surrounding communities. Weather and air quality will be continually monitored, and the training will be rescheduled if conditions are deemed not safe.

Smoke may be visible throughout the Tri-Valley, EBRPD said.
