SUNOL, CA — Niles Canyon Road between Sunol and Fremont is fully closed indefinitely due to severe storm damage, according to the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans.

The closure, which is expected to last at least a few days, was instituted Monday at 5 p.m. after large chunks of the eastbound lane washed into Alameda Creek. CHP posted video of a large crack and broken guardrail atop a large dirt cliff over the creek near Palomares Road. The eastbound lane was closed Monday until 5 p.m. as Caltrans assessed the damage.

The full closure is in effect from Main Street in Sunol to Old Canyon Road in Fremont, according to Caltrans. For real-time updates, visit the Caltrans Quickmap.
