My dad is a Vietnam veteran who suffers from COPD and has scar tissue in his lung from Agent Orange. He was in the Navy for nine years, and he worked as a Navy Seabee. He will be 86 this January 13. He lives independently in his apartment, close to family. He has told me multiple stories of him all over the world that he traveled with the Navy. He has wisdom and experience that not a lot of people have. He never pats himself on the shoulder for his service, but I really respect him and appreciate it. He has lots of stories to tell — I love listening to them. He could fill you in with all of his duties and experiences. They don’t make them like they used to.

What makes the veteran someone your community should know about?

His dedication to the military. He has so much experience and knowledge; not everybody has seen what he’s seen and lived his life. It’s really amazing listening to some of the stories, and you realize how wise he has. He has plenty of stories to tell.

What three words best describe the veteran?

Humble, wise, knowledgeable.
