PUSD Superintendent Announces August Departure

David Haglund will leave the top post at the Pleasanton Unified School District in August to return to Southern California.

PLEASANTON, CA — The Superintendent of the Pleasanton Unified School District will leave his post this summer and return to Southern California to be closer to family, according to an announcement shared Monday.

In a letter e-mailed to staffers and families, David Haglund reflected on his time in Pleasanton, thanking colleagues and school community members for their dedication even in the face of challenges.

"Thinking back on these last seven years fills me with both pride and gratitude," Haglund wrote. "Together, we have implemented innovative educational initiatives, funded construction projects to restore aged facilities, expanded student learning opportunities, embraced the growing diversity of our community, and fostered a culture of inclusivity within our schools. These accomplishments would not have been possible without your unwavering support, collaboration, and dedication to our children."

Haglund, who will step down on Aug. 1, said returning to SoCal will allow him to focus on being a grandfather of three and embark on a new chapter in life. According to the outgoing superintendent, a succession plan developed with the Board of Trustees will leave the district and its deputy superintendent with a clear course of action for finding his permanent replacement.

"I am confident that with the support of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Diolazo, the PUSD governance team, district and site leaders, and our faculty and staff will continue to invest in this organization with integrity, compassion, and a dedication to excellence," Haglund wrote. "Together, you will inspire and empower future students to reach their fullest potential."
