Tri-Valley Leaders Join CA Reaction To Historic Abortion Ruling
Local representatives spoke out after Roe v. Wade was struck down Friday.

PLEASANTON, CA — In a historical move, the U.S. Supreme Court Friday reversed the 1973 Roe v. Wade court case decision that legalized abortion in America.
The highly anticipated vote sparked controversy across the country. Protests erupted throughout the Bay Area as Governor Gavin Newsom called it an "attack on American freedom."
Tri-Valley leaders also spoke out in opposition.

Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan called Friday a “sad, horrible and devastating day.” Her statement read in part:
“We knew this day was coming, and yet it’s hard to comprehend that our rights to control our own future and our own bodies were just ripped away from us. This decision is unconscionable. It is devastating. The institution meant to protect us, has betrayed us.”
Congressman Eric Swalwell tweeted:

“Today it’s government-mandated pregnancy. Tomorrow it’s a ban on contraceptions. This is an attack on everyone’s freedom. The votes of 6 justices can be OVERWHELMED by the votes of millions of Americans asserting our own Constitutional power. Organize. March. VOTE.”
Swalwell planned a gathering for June 25:
- "Stand for women’s freedom following SCOTUS decision overturning Roe v. Wade
- 10:15 a.m. at Planned Parenthood Hayward, 1032 A Street
County organizations also spoke up Friday. Contra Costa Health Services tweeted:
“Reproductive health services remain legal, safe and available in Contra Costa County.”

The ruling ends a 49-year-old protection and will place abortion policy at the discretion of the states, and dozens are already poised to ban the procedure.
