Suspect Arrested For Castro Valley Hit-and-Run Involving Car Stolen from Tri-Valley

The man is accused of running down a 6-year-old boy as he walked to school with his grandmother.

LIVERMORE, CA: A suspect who fled after allegedly hitting a 6-year-old boy with a stolen car last week, seriously injuring the boy, was arrested early this morning at a hotel in Hayward only a few miles from the crash scene, an Alameda County sheriff's sergeant said.

A joint law enforcement effort including the sheriff's office, the California Highway Patrol and the U.S. Marshals Service tracked 29-year-old Daniel Morris, identified as a suspect in the March 7 crash, to a hotel in the 21800 block of Foothill Boulevard near the Hayward-Castro Valley border, sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly said.

Morris was taken into custody without incident at 1:15 a.m., Kelly said. He is being held on $70,000 bail on charges related to the hit-and-run and an outstanding warrant, according to jail records.

Kelly said he has a history of auto theft and is "well-known" to the Alameda County Auto Theft Task Force.

The hit-and-run happened at about 8 a.m. as the 6-year-old boy was walking on Meadowview Drive with his grandmother, according to the CHP. The boy stopped momentarily and a 2010 Ford Fusion, allegedly driven by Morris, drove up behind him, mounted the curb, hit him and then crashed into a power pole.

The child was pinned against the pole.

He was taken to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland with serious injuries.

The driver got out of the car and ran into the neighborhood, abandoning the car. Investigators searched the area but were unable to find him.

The car had been stolen during a "slightly sophisticated" burglary in Livermore earlier that day, according to police.

Four or five suspects stole five cars that were awaiting service at the Livermore Ford Lincoln dealership between 12:39 and 1:57 a.m. Investigators are still looking into whether Morris was involved in the earlier burglary.

Morris is set to appear in court on Friday afternoon for arraignment, according to jail records.
