Desert View Point Crosses Are Gone

The crosses near Julian, where residents have gathered for Easter services, are in storage pending their new home on a church property.

Three controversial crosses that stood for decades on state property near Julian were removed by Caltrans early Tuesday and are now in storage. They may move to a Julian church property.

Several complaints about the crosses had prompted the agency to conduct an investigation for possible encroachment. Caltrans determined that the crosses were on public property and had to be taken down, said a spokesperson, Catherine Bruce-Johnson.

Crews removed the crosses from Inspiration Point, also known as Desert View Point, at about 5 a.m.

Caltrans had notified the public that the crosses would be removed, to give supporters time to find a place for them.

The crosses are being kept in a storage facility until Caltrans finds them a knew home, Bruce-Johnson said. Pastor Rick Hill has offered to have the crosses relocated to the property of his Hillside Community Church. Caltrans is waiting for him to select a site and take ownership of the crosses, Bruce-Johnson said.
