Girls Water Polo Team Sinks CIF Competition for Title Win

In what Ramona High School Athletic Director is calling a "historical achievement," the varsity girls water polo team has taken the San Diego Section Division II CIF Championship title after beating out Valhalla High on Saturday 8-7 at La Jolla High’s Coggan Pool.

Damon Baldwin, athletic director, told Patch this is the first league championship this season for the school and the first CIF title.

The U-T San Diego reported that Ramona goalkeeper Tiffany Larson protected a one-goal lead through a penalty shot and two power plays by top-seeded Valhalla over the final four minutes the game.

Larson had a total of 10 saves during the game, the publication reported.

According to the U-T, Cassie Bernas and Rachel Hogervorst each scored three goals for Ramona, which helped them even out the scores 6-6 in the third quarter of the Feb. 23 game.

“It’s all amazing,” Bernas said to the newspaper. “Our team played together really well, always communicating, and Tiffany was amazing in goal.”

The Ramona High Varsity Girls water polo team is led by Coach Donnie Williams and Sofia Klar, Baldwin said.
